WMU - Maria McDaniel takes second to pace Broncos at EMU

YPSILANTI, Mich. – In the Bronco’s 2015 opener, Maria McDaniel took second overall in a field of 116 runners as the Western Michigan cross country team competed in the Eastern Michigan Celebration on Saturday morning as no team scores were recorded.
McDaniel, a first team All-Mid-American Conference runner from last season, paced the Broncos with a finishing time of 17:06.2 in the 5k race. Unattached runner Erin Finn took won the meet with a time of 16:54.9.
"It was a really good start to the season," Head coach Kelly Lycan said. "We are still a young team bu I think we have a good team and I liked how they were running hard and passing people at the end of the race."
Seven of WMU’s eight runners finished in the top-50 as sophomore Claire Gilbert finished in 24th (18:28.5), freshman Sarah Anderson finished 27th (18:37.0), sophomore Hanne Christensen finished 28th (18:42.7), and junior Daya Wagh finished in 43rd (19:40.6) to round out the Broncos top five. Freshman Renee Letz finished in 46th (19:47.3) and Makenzie Evers finished 47th (19:47.7) while Emily Davis finished 91st (22.02.6).
Next up for WMU is the lone home meet as the Broncos host the George Dales Invitational on Sept. 11 at Pine View Golf Club in Three Rivers, Mich.
