GVSU Lakers Advance Three of Five Runners to Final Championship Day

ALLENDALE, Mich. – On the second day of the 2015 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships, Grand Valley State men's and women's track & field sent three of their five competing runners and relay teams to the finals of their respective events on Saturday (May 23).
Ethan Barnes ran the 800m prelim in a time of 1:49.57, placing him second in the first heat and fifth overall. Barnes placed second in the 800 at the 2015 GLIAC Outdoor Championships, and took third in the event at the NCAA Indoor National Championships. Barnes will compete in the 800m final on Saturday at 3:55 p.m.
Sean Wells blazed past the competition in the prelim for the 110m hurdles, taking first with a time of 13.71 to advance to tomorrow's final. Wells became the first individual men's sprinter national champion in GVSU during the indoor season at the NCAA Indoor National Championships, and the first individual champion in the indoor season since 2008. Wells will compete in Saturday's 110m hurdle final at 2:55 p.m.
Following an hour-long delay after the women's 4x400 relay due to track maintenance and safety concerns, the Championships resumed with the men's 4x400 relay. The Laker team of Brent Brock, Zakry O'Brien, Daniel Pung and TJ Burnett placed fifth in the second heat and seventh overall with a time of 3:11.56 to qualify for the 4x400 relay final on Saturday at 6 p.m.
13 total GVSU field and running athletes will compete on Saturday (May 23), the final day of competition at the National Championships. Rebecka Anderson will lead off the day for the Lakers in the javelin finals at 11 a.m., while Patrick Fisch is the first Laker male to go, competing in the pole vault at 12:30 p.m. The women's 4x100 relay team of Carly Scott, Brittney Banister, Michaela Lewis and Angela Ritter will run at 2 p.m. Trent Chappell and Brandon Bean will go for Grand Valley State in the high jump at 2:05 p.m., and Chris Saikalis and Darien Thornton will throw in the shot put at 2:30 p.m.
Ricky Perez will compete as the first Laker runner on Saturday, running the 1500m championship at 2:35 p.m., and following Wells in the 110m hurdles and Barnes in the 800m will be TJ Burnett at 4:20 p.m. in the 400m hurdles final. 10k champion Amy Cymerman, along with Kendra Foley, will be the final women runners to compete on Saturday, running the 5k at 5 p.m., and Bryce Bradley will round out the competing individual Lakers by running the 5k at 5:25 p.m.
