Grand Valley State Set to Host NCAA Championships

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships are one day away from commencing, and the Grand Valley State men's and women's teams are looking to add another trophy to the crowded trophy case. The Laker women are looking for their third title and first since 2012, while the men aim for their first championship in program history.

The men's team, holding a ranking of eighth in the final USTFCCCA Division II poll of the regular season, will be sending 14 individual athletes and one relay team, while the fifth-ranked women's team will be sending 13 individuals and two relay teams to compete in the three-day championship held on their home turf for the second consecutive year.

Thursday's (May 21) action kicks off at 10:30 a.m. with the Decathlon. Grand Valley State will see their first athlete compete at 12:30 p.m., with Laura Schroeder representing GVSU in the hammer throw. Counting Schroeder, nine Laker individuals and one relay team will be competing on Thursday.

The most GVSU athletes competing in one event will be in the women's pole vault, with Jamie Roberts, Jennifer Schornak, Whitney Bice and Alexandra Kitz representing the Lakers at 2 p.m. Sarah Talbott and Alexis Duncan will compete in the long jump, Angela Ritter will run the 100m dash preliminary at 6:10 p.m., Breanna Luba will run the 400m hurdle preliminary at 7:40 p.m., and Amy Cymerman will compete at 8:10 p.m. in the 10k to wrap up the Laker women competing on the first day. The Laker 4x100 relay team of Carly Scott, Brittney Banister, Michaela Lewis and Ritter will run at 4:50 p.m.

The first male Lakers to show their stuff on Thursday will be Darien Thornton and Mike Moon in the hammer throw at 3:30 p.m. Ricky Perez and Wuoi Mach will be running the 1500m prelims together at 5:25 p.m., and TJ Burnett will compete in the 400m hurdles prelims at 7:55 p.m.

Friday (May 22) will see GVSU send two individuals and two relay teams on the track. Sean Wells will run the 200m dash prelims at 5:45 p.m. and the 110m hurdle prelims at 6:50 p.m. The junior sprinter will also compete along with Brent Brock, Daniel Pung and TJ Burnett at 8:10 p.m. in the 4x400 relay prelims. Ethan Barnes will also be running on Friday in the 800m prelims at 6:15 p.m. The lone women competitors on Friday will be the 4x400 relay team of Alexis Duncan, Brittney Banister, Breanna Luba and Angela Ritter running their prelim at 7:50 p.m.

Grand Valley State will be represented by seven confirmed athletes competing on Saturday (May 23), the third and final day of the NCAA Championships, and 10 more potential runners and relay teams. Rebecka Anderson will be the first Laker female of the day to compete at 11 a.m., while Patrick Fisch will kick off the day for the Laker men in the pole vault at 12:30 p.m. The men's high jump, starting at 2:05 p.m., will see Trent Chappell and Brandon Bean represent GVSU, while Chris Saikalis and Darien Thornton will try to score points for the Lakers in the shot put at 2:20 p.m. Kendra Foley and Amy Cymerman will run the 5k at 5 p.m., and Bryce Bradley will run the 5k shortly after at 5:25 p.m.
