MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com)—At the end of the first day of the 2015 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field team is in third with 20.5 points. Leading all teams is Akron with 37 points, while Toledo has the slight edge on the Eagles with 21 points.



Friday saw the first four events of the heptathlon, with reigning MAC champion Sarah Chauchard (Montpellier, France-University of Montpellier) holding on to the top spot with 3,375 points while Kate Wolanin (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford) is in sixth with 3,102 points. Chauchard started off well, notching a personal record in the 100m hurdles of 14.07 seconds to take third in the event. Wolanin was just two hundredths of a second off her best time, crossing the line in 14.98 seconds to finish eighth. In the high jump, Wolanin paced the pair as she cleared 1.72 meters/5 feet 7.75-inches to take second, and Chauchard matched her personal best of 1.69 meters/5 feet 6.50-inches for third. Chauchard picked up her first event win in the shot put, throwing 12.82 meters/42 feet 00.75-inches for a winning margin of nearly a meter. Wolanin had a career performance in the shot put, taking fifth with a launch of 10.50 meters/34 feet 5.50-inches. The pair wrapped up the day with the 200m dash, with Chauchard taking fifth in 25.41 seconds while Wolanin finished sixth in 25.77 seconds. Both athletes will wrap up their seven-event slate tomorrow, beginning with the long jump at 11:30 a.m.



Eastern saw three field events contested on the first day of action. Claiming the highest finishes for the Green and White was the pair of Natalie Uy (Kettering, Ohio-Fairmont) and Janina Pollatz (Grandville, Mich.-Grand Rapids Christian). The two Eagles both cleared a height of 3.86 meters/12 feet 8-inches, but Uy earned the runner-up finish by jump attempts while Pollatz claimed a share of the bronze with Buffalo's Kelly Truppo after her career performance. Also competing in the event was Ellie Braidic (Pandora, Ohio-Pandora-Gilboa), who claimed ninth with a clearance of 3.71 meters/12 feet 2-inches.



Freshman Helga Volgyi (Szombathely, Hungary-Savaria Technical College) earned a spot on the podium in the hammer throw with the third-farthest throw of her collegiate career. Volgyi took fifth in a highly competitive field that featured national leader Brooke Pleger of Bowling Green, as the freshman threw 57.63 meters/189 feet 1-inch. Recording a personal best in the event was Megan Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio-Woodmore), taking 15th with a throw of 49.59 meters/162 feet 8-inches, while Adrienne Waisner (Napoleon, Ohio-Napoleon) finished 20th at 47.19 meters/154 feet 9-inches.



Chauchard also competed in one more event, just missing out on the podium in the javelin throw. The senior finished ninth overall with a launch of 38.74 meters/127 feet 1-inch, and was followed by a career record by Kristina Coyne (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Chartiers Valley) with an 11th-place throw of 36.44 meters/119 feet 6-inches.



Eastern ended the first day with the 10,000m run, in which freshman Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison) established herself in the front six runners early in the race. As freshman Kelsey Hildreth of Northern Illinois went on to win in a MAC meet record time, McDermitt crossed the line in 35:52.72 for sixth. Finishing 16th in a personal record of 37:32.07 was Amy Frauhammer (Saline, Mich.-Saline), while Lauren Pottschmidt (Granger, Ind.-Penn) claimed 21st in 38:55.78.



The Eagles will continue with the second day of the MAC Championships tomorrow, May 15. The first track event will be the 1500m trials at 1 p.m., while the first event on the field will be the long jump at 4 p.m. Live results will be provided through finishtiming.com.
