HILLSDALE, Mich. - Serena San Cartier broke the 100m hurdles school record with a time 13.55 that should be in consideration as a NCAA Preliminary qualifying time while Andrew Bowman also broke the school 3000m steeplechase mark with a time of 9:06.52 at the Hillsdale Last Chance Meet.
At the Toledo Invitational, Aaron Davis won the 200m dash with a time of 21.59 followed by Jeff Arirguzo in third at 21.80. David Koponen set a new personal record to win the 800m at 1:51.90, Tré Brown claimed the 400m hurdle title with a time of 53.69 while Sydney Sterling's mark of 56.14 won the 400m. Zach Joyce also took second in the 400m running 50.14 while Angela Ciaravino finished fourth in the high jump at five feet, three inches
"With the Horizon League Championships being so early (four weeks prior to NCAA First Round), we needed to give a handful of athletes a shot this weekend to improve on their performances from the season and see if we could possible get some qualifying marks," said head coach, Paul Rice. "We accomplished just that for a few of the athletes that competed this weekend as Serena took advantage of the great conditions at Hillsdale and set a new school and PR time that surely will get her into the NCAA first round. Andy also set a new school record in the steeple chase, but right now sits about five seconds off a mark that will get him into the first round. We are looking at maybe trying to get him one more shot next weekend. The performances at Toledo and GVSU didn't produce any other potential qualifiers, but we did have some great individual event wins and a few new PR's. In particular, Dave Koponen setting a new 800m PR in the final race of his incredible career. It has been a great season and I am looking forward to "Declaration Sunday" next week to see how many of our athletes will get a bid to the first round of the NCAA Championships. We definitely have a very deserving few that will likely get in."
Gino Vitella also finished sixth in the shot put with a toss of 52 feet, 2.50 inches followed by Tyler Sirut who finished 11th with a throw of 42 feet, 4.25 inches at the GVSU Last Chance Meet.
The NCAA will announce the Championship Preliminary Round qualifiers on Sunday, May 17.
