OU - Vitella sets outdoor shot put school record at Golden Grizzly Duals

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Gino Vitella set a new outdoor school record with a shot put throw of 57 feet, 8.9 inches while Serena San Cartier won the 100m hurdles title with a time of 14.06 and finished second in the 200m dash at 25.52 to lead both Oakland track and field teams to 3-1 records at the Golden Grizzly Duals held at the new track and field stadium on Saturday. Vitella's throw distance could be in consideration as a NCAA Preliminary qualifying mark by the end of the outdoor regular season.
The men's team secured wins over rival University of Detroit Mercy (90-31), IPFW (97-6) and Valparaiso (96-29) while being edged by Central Michigan (69-67). The women's team also defeated UDM (88-54), IPFW (100-44) and Valparaiso (107-21) and were nipped by CMU (78-74). The Chippewas finished the meet with perfect 4-0 records on both sides
Top men's track performances included Bryce Stroede who won the 1500m with a time of 3:56.20 while David Koponen finished first in the 800m at 1:54.96. The Golden Grizzlies swept the 5000m with Andrew Bowman placing first with a time of 15:03.85 followed by George O'Connor who finished second at 15:11.40 and Nathan Ziolko in third at 15:11.40.
In the field events, Matthew Jordan won the triple jump with a 44 feet, 6.25 inch mark while Tyler Beeson finished second behind Vitella in the shot put with a toss of 45 feet, 4.5 inches.
On the women's side, Miranda Haas set a 3000m steeplechase second place school record and personal best time of 10:57. Ashley Burr led the way in the 5000m finishing first with a time of 17:28.12 followed by Jenae Curley in second at 17:51.46 and Alana Koepf in third at 17:57.72. Oakland also completed the sweep in the 10000m as Kaitlin Catania finished first with a time of 39:15.50 followed by Lauren Zens in second at 39:40.17 and Abigail Bringard in third running 41:22.90.The 4X400 relay team of Sydney Sterling, Elizabeth Girardot, Jilliam Flint and Candice Mack also finished first with a time of 4:03.87
Ashley Jemison finished first in the shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 1.25 inches while Angela Ciaravino won the high jump with a 5 feet, 1.0 inch mark to lead Oakland in the field events.
Oakland will travel to the Al Owens Classic hosted by Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich. beginning on Friday, April 17.
