CHARLESTON, ILL. – On the third and final day of competition at the Eastern Illinois Big Blue Classic, the Grand Valley State men's and women's track & field teams saw 12 total athletes nail NCAA qualifying marks.
The fifth-ranked men had one athlete, indoor All-American and national champion Sean Wells, set a school record and hit an NCAA automatic and provisional mark. Four other male athletes hit provisional marks, while six athletes hit provisional marks for the 20th-ranked women's team.
Running in the 110-meter hurdle preliminaries, Wells qualified for the final with a time of 14.74 and ran the race in a scorching 14.01 to place third. The junior sprinter broke his own record set from last weekend's Raleigh Relays, where he placed second. Wells also hit a provisional mark in the 200-meter dash, where he placed third with a time of 21.13.
Also earning provisional marks for the Laker men were Trent Chappell (4th, 2.16m) in the high jump, Chris Saikalis (2nd, 18.00m) and Darien Thornton (4th, 16.16m) in the shot put, and Blake Donson (7th, 49.38m) in the discus throw. Although he didn't hit any qualifying marks, Samora Nesbitt placed first in the triple jump with a mark of 14.32 meters.
Along with the six athletes to hit provisional marks, two field athletes took first in their respective events. Alexis Duncan hit a provisional with a first-place mark of 5.94 meters in the long jump, and Rebecka Anderson made a throw of 45.15 meters in the javelin throw, hitting a provisional mark while taking first in the event.
Other Laker women hitting provisional qualifiers were Sarah Talbott (4th, 5.76m) in the long jump, Jamie Roberts (9th, 3.67m) and Alexandra Kitz (11th, 3.67m) in the pole vault, and Laura Schroeder (6th, 58.90m) in the hammer throw. Schroeder, an All-American in the weight throw during the indoor season, was just 15 centimeters away from hitting an automatic mark.
Next weekend will prove to be a busy weekend for Grand Valley State. From Friday (Apr. 10) to Saturday (Apr. 11), the Lakers will be in Bowling Green, Ky. for the WKU Hilltopper Relays. The Lakers will also be at the Hillsdale Invitational in Hillsdale, Mich., and the George Mason Spring Invitational in Fairfax, Va.
