Hillsdale College - Oren Captures GLIAC and National Athlete of the Week Honors
Provided by Hillsdale
Hillsdale College junior Emily Oren was a two-time national champion during the 2014-15 indoor track season. In her outdoor season debut, she had a performance that may have exceeded anything she did during indoor season.
Oren was named both the GLIAC Women's Track Athlete of the Week and the USTFCCCA Division II National Women's Track Athlete of the Week on Tuesday. This is the second time this school year Oren has garnered a national athlete of the week honor, adding to one she earned during cross country season in October.
In the first outdoor meet of 2015, Oren wiped out the competition in the 3000 meter steeplechase at the Raleigh Relays on the campus of North Carolina State University. Her winning time of 10:04.79 was not only good for first place at the meet, a new school record (breaking her own mark by 23 seconds) and is the best time overall in the nation in that event, including all NCAA divisions. Oren's time is 14 seconds better than any other women's outdoor steeplechase runner so far this season.
That time also shattered the facility record at NC State, which is a "power conference" member of the ACC.
She was part of Hillsdale's national champion distance medley relay team earlier this month, and was the national champion in the 3000 meter run at the NCAA indoor track championships. In the 014 outdoor season, Oren finished fifth in the NCAA in the 3000 meter steeplechase.
