There's breaking records, then there's destroying them and leaving them in tiny little pieces. Emily Oren did the latter over the weekend.
The junior All-American (pictured) had a smashing debut to the 2015 outdoor track season, setting a school and facility record in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:04.79. Oren herself held the old school record, set at NCAAs last year (10:27), and she broke the North Carolina State University facility record, which was 10:06. NC State is a member of the ACC.
Oren's teammate Kate Royer took 23rd in the steeplechase, making a strong outdoor season debut herself.
Junior Kristina Galat finished 10th in a tough field in the 10,000 meters, at 34:58.54. Her freshman teammate Hannah McIntyre wasn't far behind, placing 18th with a time of 35:30.14.
The Chargers' 4x400 meter relay team finished ninth overall, opening the season with a time of 3:55.1 by the foursome of Corinne Zehner, Fiona Shea, Emily Guy and Allison Duber.
A pair of underclassmen also performed well in the field events. Sophomore Alexandra Whitford took 12th in the pole vault and sophomore Dana Newell took 10th in the hammer throw.
