UDM - Men's Track & Field Wraps Up Competition at Winthrop Invitational

ROCK HILL, S.C. (3/28/2015) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's track and field team competed Saturday in the final day at the three-day Winthrop Invitational at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Complex. Saturday's events wrapped up the first outdoor meet of the season for the squad.
Sophomore sprinter Khalil Parris, who qualified for the 400 meter finals on Friday with a time of 49.60, improved upon that time Saturday, placing fourth overall in the event in 49.45. Parris also competed in the 400 meter hurdles, finishing 19th with a time of 58.70.
Sophomore Ilia Panev was Detroit's top finisher in the 400 meter hurdles, crossing in 57.89 to finish in the top half of the event in 14th place.
One day after placing third in the hammer, senior Eric Lewis finished 11th in his season debut in the discus with a throw of 39.98 meters (131' 2.25").
Freshman Ben Kendell and sophomore Ryan Leahy each made their collegiate debuts in the 1,500 meter run after placing 1-2 respectively on Friday in the 5,000 meters. Kendell finished with a time of 4:07.60 to place seventh. Leahy crossed in 12th with a time of 4:13.01, while junior Austin Wigent had a time of 4:20.76 for Detroit.
Senior Ylli Alla competed in the 3,000 meter steeplechase for the Titans and finished eighth overall with a time of 10:25.30.
Senior George Holman and freshman Miles Kelleher also ran the 1,500 meter distance for Detroit, finishing with times of 4:28.00 and 4:30.60, respectively.
Detroit placed seventh out of 16 teams in the 4x400 meter relay. The quartet finished with a time of 3:26.83.
The Titans return to the track and field on Friday and Saturday, April 3-4 for the Oakland Duals. The Golden Grizzlies will visit UDM on Friday for the throwing events, before the meet moves to Rochester on Saturday for the rest of the meet.
