RALEIGH, N.C. - Candice Mack broke the 400m school record with a time of 57.18 to finish 16th out of 119 runners while Gino Vitella finished seventh out of 52 competitors in the shot put with a throw of 53 feet, 52 inches to lead Oakland in the final day of competition at the Raleigh Relays held at the Paul Derr Track. Aaron Davis also placed sixth in the 200m with a time of 22.34.
The Golden Grizzlies also got personal records in the 5000m from Jenae Curley (18:02.07), Bryce Stroede (14:23.87) and Andrew Bowman (14:57.94).
"This weekend at Raleigh was a great way to start the season for this group," said head coach Paul Rice. "The weather was less than ideal, but we still came away with some really nice performances. Friday we had a handful of personal records with Candice breaking the 400m school record. Three PR's also came out of the 5K with Jenae, Bryce and Andy running great in some pretty poor conditions. The women's 4x100 relay team ran an impressive time with a major headwind. All in all between the two days of competition, we really had a nice start to the season. Now we move into a huge week full of excitement with our first ever home meet next Saturday against Detroit."
The women's 4x100 relay team of Serena San Cartier, Kendell Jefferson, Sydney Sterling and Mack finished 16th out of 39 teams with a time of 48.45.
The 10th annual dual meet between Oakland and rival University of Detroit Mercy will be hosted by the Golden Grizzlies in the first home meet at the new track facility on Saturday, April 4.
