GVSU - Lakers Finish Strong at Big Meet

Allendale, Mich. – The Grand Valley State track & field teams wrapped up competition at the GVSU Big Meet on Saturday (Feb. 14), hitting 22 combined provisional marks on the day. It was the last day of competition at a meet that saw over 2,000 athletes compete throughout the two-day meet at the Kelly Family Sports Center.
Of the 22 provisional marks hit by Lakers on the day, five of them came in event victories. Laura Schroeder was the lone winner on the women's side, taking first in the weight throw with a toss of 18.75 meters (61' 6.18").
The Laker men were able to pull in three individual wins and one team victory. The team victory came in the Distance Medley Relay, where the GVSU 'A' team of Wuoi Mach, Joel Rietsma, TJ Burnett, and Ricky Perez ran the race in 9:54.59 to take first along with a provisional qualifying mark. Individual wins came from Sean Wells in the 60 meter hurdles (8.06), Chris Saikalis in the shot put (16.86m/55' 3.78"), and Jay Lechner in the weight throw (19.54m/64' 1.28").
The most provisional marks set in one event for the Lakers came in the pole vault, with Jamie Roberts (2nd, 3.91m/12' 9.94"), Alexandra Kitz (3rd, 3.81m/12' 5.99"), Jennifer Schornak (4th, 3.81m/12' 5.99"), Michaila Lawcock (5th, 3.66m/ 12' 0.09"), and Krista Nauseda (6th, 3.66m/12' 0.09") all surpassing the NCAA qualifier mark in the event.
The Big Meet, billed as one of the biggest collegiate indoor meets in the country, was the fourth of five indoor home meets for Grand Valley State. The Lakers will conclude the home portion of their indoor schedule on Friday (Feb. 20) when they host the GVSU Tune-Up.
