AVON, Ohio - A school record, and several top 10 finishes highlighted the Central Michigan performances at the Spire Invitational at Spire Institute.

Abbey Kelto shattered the CMU record in the women's 3000-meter run, placing fifth in 9 minutes, 27.44 seconds. She broke the record of 9:34.7 set in 1987 by Chris Cooper.

It was another historic feat for Kelto, a senior who in December set the school indoor 5,000-meter mark at the Saginaw Valley State University Holiday Classic.

In November, Kelto became the first CMU female to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships, where she placed 84th and went on to earn All-Academic from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

CMU student-athletes notched four top-five finishes in the pole vault, two in the throws and one in the sprints.

The Chippewas' Zack Shepard was third and Tony Armstrong fourth in the men's pole vault, both at 15 feet, 6 ¼ inches. In the women's pole vault, CMU's Rebekah Petty was fourth and McKenzie Wieber was fifth, both at 12-0 ½.

CMU's Cole Walderzak and Devene Brown placed fifth in the men's weight throw and women's shot put, respectively. Walderzak's throw measured 63-5, Brown's 48-0 ½.

CMU's Tina Davis placed fifth in the women's 60-meter dash, finishing in 7.59 seconds.

"I'm glad we competed and stuck our nose in there," said Mark Guthrie, CMU director of track & field/cross country. "We're two weeks out of the MAC meets. If they didn't do well they need to next time out, and if they did do well they need to continue to do that if we are going to do well in the conference meet."

Three CMU women - April Micheaux, Wendy Szuminski and Kyla Walton - competed in the pentathlon. Micheaux finished sixth, Szuminski was eight; and Walton was 10th. Micheaux managed a first in the shot put at 40-4 ¼.

"Those are three freshmen that have never done the pentathlon before," Guthrie said. "So now that they have a mark they can go from there."

Also For CMU:

• Malik Vasquez ran a personal-record 47.84 in the men's 400-meter dash, placing sixth.

• The women's 4x400 relay team placed seventh in 3:43.22. Ravyn Baxter, Bridget Doughty, Emma Fishnick and Kelsey Ross comprised the team.

• Matt Mueller placed eighth in the men's high jump at 6-7

• Shaya Wilkerson finished 10th in the women's triple jump at 38-9.

CMU will travel to Allendale, Mich., for the Grand Valley State Tune-up on Friday, Feb. 20. On Saturday, Feb. 21, CMU will partake in the Silverton Invitational at Michigan.
