GENEVA, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field team competed in six events to close out the weekend slate at the SPIRE Invitational, Feb. 14.
Freshman harrier Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison) continues to etch her name into EMU history during a spectacular rookie season, as she recorded the second-fastest time in program laurels in the 3000m run. McDermitt finished second in 9:22.72, barely taking the runner-up spot by .60 seconds to North Carolina State's Samantha George. Her mark easily qualifies the freshman for the 2015 Mid-American Conference Championships, as it is the fastest time in the conference by more than three seconds.
Another freshman earned her spot in the EMU record book, as Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich.-Chippewa Valley) ran the ninth-fastest mile time in 4:52.51, placing 16th overall. Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42) paced the Eagles, taking seventh in a season-best 4:44.21, while Danielle Bentzley (Birmingham, Mich.-Seaholm) crossed the line in 5:12.58.
Senior Taylor Knoll (Warren, Mich.-Mott (Lansing CC)) also cracked the top-10 list 800m, placing 15th in 2:11.68 for nearly seven seconds of improvement on her personal record and a mark good for ninth in EMU laurels. Her mark is the fastest on the team this season and the fifth-best in the MAC, earning her an automatic bid to the conference championship. Rebecca Quaintance (Walled Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) finished in 2:18.29, and Claire Mesa (Rockford, Ill.-Rockford Lutheran) set a career record at 2:19.34.
In the sprints, both Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa.-Hempfield Area) and Aaliyah McKinney (South Bend, Ind.-John Adams) qualified to the finals with times of 7.74 and 7.69 seconds, respectively. McKinney went on to finish sixth in 7.64 seconds, while Jones grabbed eighth place in 7.72 seconds.
Two competitors represented the Green and White in the 60m hurdles and 400m dash. In the hurdles, Maya Carter (Racine, Wis.-Case) paced Dayna Hurd (Carson, Calif.-Carson) in 9.11 seconds for 27th place. The top finisher for the Eagles in the 400m was Morgan Yeadon (Indianapolis, Ind.-Pike), who recorded a career best of 56.52 seconds to finish 24th.
To cap off the meet, the lineup of Hurd, Carter, Iesha Hardiman (Santa Clara, Calif.-Adrian Wilcox), and Agata Klimovich (Minsk, Belarus-Minsk School of Olympic Reserve) teamed up to finish the 4x400m relay in 3:51.09, good for 11th.
Eastern will stay close to home in preparation for the MAC Championships, heading to the University of Michigan for the Silverston Invitational Saturday, Feb. 21.
