GENEVA, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field team wrapped up its weekend with a handful of events at the SPIRE Invitational, Feb. 14.
The meet was highlighted by two athletes that posted the highest marks in over a decade in their respective events. With a morning victory in the long jump, Donald Scott (Apopka, Fla.-Apopka) moved up to second on the all-time list with a leap of 7.53 meters/24 feet 8.50-inches, which is the best mark since James Chikwe set the program standard in 1994. Scott won by nearly eight inches to secure his victory after improving on his personal best set just one week ago by five inches.
In the 3000m, Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee) became just the third Eagle to run a sub-eight-minute mark. The redshirt sophomore edged out Gordon Minty by .70 seconds to mark the second-fastest time in program laurels en route to a runner-up finish. Fink now holds a commanding lead over the Mid-American Conference by nearly 10 seconds, and his time stands as the 14th-fastest in the nation. The entire EMU lineup in the 3000m performed exceptionally well, with all five harriers earning automatic MAC qualifying marks. Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland-Mountain Ridge (Alderson Broaddus) finished 13th in his collegiate 3000m debut in 8:13.55, while Harry Dixon (Nelson, New Zealand-Nayland College) clocked in at a career-best 8:14.15 for 14th. Also landing in the top-20 was Warren Witchell (Williamston, Mich.-Dansville) in 8:16.93, while John Knox (Gloversville, N.Y.-Gloversville) set a personal record in 8:24.42 for 23rd.
Another group of Eagles scored well by MAC standards in the 400m dash. Cameron Bolton (Missouri City, Texas-Hightower) finished fourth in 47.51 seconds, and was followed by a personal-best mark of 47.84 seconds by Jeff Elam (Latrobe, Pa.-Greater Latrobe Senior). Matthew Williams (Moreno Valley, Calif.-Vista Del Lago) also received a MAC qualifying mark in 48.15, placing 10th.
In the 800m run, Scott Bradley (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) ran a season-best 1:51.68 to finish 11th and earn his bid to the conference championship. Eastern's group of mile competitors came close to meeting the MAC standard, with two Eagles notching career highs. Mitch Lenneman (River Falls, Wis.-River Falls) led the pack in 4:12.24, a three-second improvement from last week, to finish 11th, while Caleb Hess (Owosso, Mich.-Owosso) took 17th in 4:14.45 and Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich.-Mason) placed 18th in 4;14.62.
Three more events were contested throughout the day. In the 60m dash, Kevin Snead (Richmond, Va.-George Wythe) advanced to the finals with matching times of 6.93 seconds in both heats for ninth overall, and Solomon Ijah (Murrieta, Calif.-Murrieta Valley) crossed the line in the 60m hurdles in 8.31 seconds. In his first meet of the season, Ryan Brumfield (Chester Springs, Pa.-Owen J Robert) jumped 2.01 meters/6 feet 7-inches in the high jump to place fifth.
Eastern will stay close to home in preparation for the MAC Championships, heading to the University of Michigan for the Silverston Invitational Saturday, Feb. 21.
