GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone visited the new Indoor Track & Field facility at Aquinas College for the first annual Furniture City Challenge and came away with a fourth place finish. The meet featured Grand Rapids area teams from Aquinas, Cornerstone Calvin and Davenport.
Junior, Jon Brinks (JR/Hudsonville, Mich.) got the evening started by taking second in his heat of the 60 meter dash in 7.15. He followed that up by running new best time of 7.02 to take second in the finals. The time moves him to fourth on the CU all-time list.
Senior, Jared Holmberg (SR/Muskegon, Mich.) won the 1,000 meters after nearly missing the race entirely. His warm up run took him into an unfamiliar neighborhood where a two mile warm up turned into four. He found his way back just in time to put on his spikes and step to the starting line. A 61 second first 400 meters set him up well as he took the win in 2:37.53.
Freshman, Kevin Vroegh (FR/Dyer, Ind.) claimed the runner-up spot in the 600 meters, clocking a new best time of 1:23.18.
In the shot put, John Piatek (FR/Traverse City, Mich.) tied his freshman record set last week to take second with a toss of 48' 10 ¼". Ross Raymond (SR/Tustin, Mich.) was third at 48' 2". Raymond took third in the 35-pound weight throw as well with a mark of 45' 3".
The host team won with 185 points. Calvin took second with 142, followed by Davenport's 126 and Cornerstone with 96.
Cornerstone will be in action next weekend when they compete out at Grand Valley State in the annual "Big Meet" on Friday and Saturday.
