LSSU - Valdez hits automatic qualifying height and sets new meet record at Hillsdale

HILLSDALE – Lake Superior State’s Robert Valdez continued his string of school-record high jump performances by clearing 2.17 meters (7-feet, 1 ½ inches) at the Hillsdale Wide Track Classic held Friday and Saturday. Valdez also met the NCAA Automatic Qualifying Standard and set new meet and Biermann track records.
LSSU’s Justin Dieck placed second in the shot put with a distance of 17.24 meters, finishing behind the top-ranked thrower in Division II (Findlay’s Taylor Miller, 17.33 meters). Other top-10 finishers for LSSU were Nolin Livingston taking sixth in the weight throw (17.10 meters), Sean Suehr landing seventh in the 400-meter dash (:51.56), and Ryan Rogers in ninth in the men’s 1-mile run (4:40.87).
“All in all, a great meet with many season bests,” LSSU track and field coach Jason Davis said. “We seem to be rounding into form at the right time of the year.”
Brandon Hein finished 11th in the men’s 800-meter run (2:07.01), and Yazin Joseph was 14th in the 400-meter dash (:52.41).
Caroline Strasser placed 12th in the women’s long jump (5.11 meters) and triple jump (10.41 meters). Sarah Swider placed 13th (5.09) and Rebecka Knox 19th (4.73) in the long jump. Jessica Allen finished 14th in the 1-mile run (5:49.93).
