SAGINAW, Mich. - Aaron Davis won his second 200m title of the season with a time of 21.99 to lead the Oakland track and field team at the Jet's Pizza Invitational hosted by Saginaw State University on Saturday at the SVSU Fieldhouse. The relay team of Karli Keur, Elizabeth Girardot, Lydia Stanley and Ashley Burr also won the women's distance medley with a mark of 12:19.85.
"Today was another step in the process of testing our student-athletes and seeing how they respond," said head coach Paul Rice. "Our training is at a very high level right now so they are not fresh in competition by any means. I think we saw some great performances today and that will carry us into another strong week of training coming up. The women's distance medley team looked real good today basically racing by themselves. The hurdlers and sprinters produced some nice personal records (PR), and our men's mile runners had a good day. The distance athletes showed some great improvements and the field event athletes are also showing nice improvements. The bottom line is that each week we see numbers of PR'S and season bests. If that trend continues, then come the end of February, we should be fully prepared for a great team performance at the championships."
The men's team also got strong second place performances from Austin Dawn in the 800m with a time of 1:57.19 and Gino Vitella in the shot put with a toss of 55 inches, 7.5 feet. The 4X400m relay A-team of Derrek Williams, David Koponen, Tre Brown and Chris Scott also finished second at 3:21.25.
Nathan Ziolko finished third in the 3000m at 8:40.20 while Andrew Bowman, George O'Connor, Jacob Bowman and Cameron Karagitz all finished in the top 10 in the 1-mile run placing fourth, sixth, eighth and ninth respectively.
On the women's side, Candice Mack finished fourth in the 400m with a mark of 58.19 followed by Sydney Sterling in seventh at 1:00.21. Keur also posted a fifth place time of 2:18.89 in the 800m while Burr placed fourth in the 3000m with a time of 10:12.80. Alana Koepf and Cassandra Peterson also finished eighth and 10th respectively.
Both teams hit the road for the YSU National Invitational held in Youngstown, Ohio on Feb. 6-7.
