ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Oakland men’s and women’s cross country teams head to Madison, Wis. to compete in the 2014 NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday, Nov. 14. The meet will be held at Zimmer Championship Course with the women's 6K race starting at 1 p.m. ET and the men’s 10K to follow at 2 p.m. ET.

“The NCAA Great Lakes Regional will be a great experience for a very young group of athletes,” said head coach Paul Rice. “This is the highest level of competition they will run against all season. At this point in our season we are in "maintenance mode". We are beginning to turn the corner towards indoors, but looking for a great end of the season race from everyone on Friday. The Madison course is a true national level course that is a bit challenging, but will run fast because of the competition. We will be shooting to compete well with the Horizon League schools we are racing against and hopefully make a move past a few that beat us a few weeks ago.”

In last season’s NCAA Great Lakes Regional, Sammy Mondry finished the 6K in 123rd place with a time of 22:51 while Michael Cox placed 122nd in the 10K race at 33:21. The women's team came in 24th place while the men finished 27th overall.

Two weeks ago, Nathan Ziolko earned First-Team All-Horizon League honors while Jacob Bowman, Karli Keur and Ashley Burr garnered Second Team All-Horizon League accolades at the Horizon League Championships held on Saturday, Nov. 1 at the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course. Ziolko finished seventh in the 8K race with a time of 25.05 while Bowman placed ninth at 25:08 helping the men’s team finish fourth with 77 points. Keur and Burr finished 11th and 12th respectively in the 6K race one second apart at 22:22 and 22:23 guiding the women’s team to a third place finish with 89 points.

For the second time this season, Andrew Bowman was named Horizon League Runner of the Week for the week of Sept. 29 - Oct. 5 after leading Oakland to a 10th place team finish at the Notre Dame Invitational finishing 21st out of 181 runners in the men's 5-mile race with a time of 24:40.6.

Earlier this season, Bowman earned Runner of the Week honors after capturing the men's 6K title in the 14th annual Golden Grizzly Open with a time of 18:40.9. He won the race by almost 12 seconds helping Oakland claim the team title defeating The University of Detroit Mercy 27-29.

Burr was also named Horizon League Runner of the Week finishing the women's 4K with a time of 14:40.2 to lead Oakland’s women's team to a first-place finish over The University of Detroit Mercy 20 - 41 at the Golden Grizzly Open.
