WSU - Women's Cross Country Placed Third at GLIAC Championships

TIFFIN, Ohio -- Junior Chelsea Johnson (Oxford, Mich.) placed ninth overall to help lead the Wayne State University women's cross country team to place third out of 15 teams Saturday at the 2014 GLIAC Cross Country Championships. The meet was hosted by Tiffin University.
The Warriors accumulated 79 points. Grand Valley State claimed the women's team title with 21 points. The finish in the top five was the fifth straight year that WSU has finished in the top five as a team at the conference championships.
Johnson earned First Team All-GLIAC honors by finishing in the top 10, completing the 6-kilometer race in ninth with a time of 21:10.7.
Wayne State had four more runners finish in the top 30. Kayla Balfour (St. Clair, Mich.), Lauren Gagnon (Riverview, Mich.), Brittany Johnson (Oxford, Mich.) swept places 13 thru 15, respectively. Junior Balfour placed 13th with a time of 21:16.8 and senior Gagnon raced in a time of 21:17.4 for 14th place. Johnson earned a time of 21:24.0 for 15th place.
Senior Kayla Smade (Columbus, Mich. / St. Clair) crossed the line at 21:53.4 for 29th place. Sophomore Leah Coonrod (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Gull Lake) placed 89th in a time of 23:42.7.
Junior Annie Okonowski (Dearborn, Mich. / Divine Child) finished 96th for a time of 23:55.4 and senior Alyssa Auth (Eastpointe, Mich. / East Detroit) completed in a time of 23:59.4 for 101st place.
Freshman Kaley Kauff (Allen Park, Mich.) came in 125th place and a time of 25:12.6 in her first conference meet.
