Grand Valley State Competes at Jayhawk Invite

MUSKEGON, Mich. - After dominating performances in South Bend and Lansing this past weekend, Grand Valley State hit the trail again at the 2014 Jayhawk Cross Country Invitational in Muskegon.
Although the coaches rested their veteran runners and ran less experienced members of the team, the Laker men still sprinted away with the event, picking up 20 points to take first place.
Leading the way for the men's squad was Joe Cecil, placing second with a time of 25:30.99, and being the first of four Lakers to place in the top 10. Following the redshirt sophomore across the finish line were Josh Steible in third (25:36.49), David Powell in seventh (25:46.50), and Greg Madendorp in 10th (26:04.16). Also placing in the top 40 for GVSU were Ethan Barnes in 11th (26:06.04), David Arenz in 15th (26:14.21), Grant Truskowski in 18th (26:18.49), Mitch Tiethof in 23rd (26:30.96), and Mowgli Crosby in 40th (27:07.11) to round out the placing Laker runners.
Meanwhile, on the women's side, only two runners suited up to run the 5k course. Of the two, the highest placing Laker runner was redshirt sophomore Katie Shaheen in sixth with a time of 18:58.83, while junior Natalie Nelson completed the course in 20:14.74 to place 36th on the evening.
Grand Valley State heads back to the trail on Saturday, October 18, when they travel to Wisconsin to compete in the 2014 UW-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational. Following their meet in Oshkosh, the Lakers prepare for the 2014 GLIAC Championship in Milford Township on November 8.
