ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior/junior Mason Ferlic (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds Park Academy) of the 11th-ranked University of Michigan men's cross country team was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week on Tuesday (Oct. 7).
Ferlic earned the honor after taking the individual title among a field of 200 runners at last weekend's (Saturday, Oct. 3) 8K Notre Dame Invitational event with a time of 23:15.7. He led the way for the Wolverines, who earned the team victory with a score of 97 points, besting a field of competition that featured eight other top-25 ranked programs.
This week's honors mark the fourth time in Ferlic's career that he has been named as the conference's athlete of the week. Last season, he earned the recognition on Oct. 22 after helping an unranked U-M squad finish ninth at the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational. As a sophomore, he collected his first conference award for helping lead the Maize and Blue to a sixth-place finish at the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational, and earlier this season, Ferlic collected the award after racing to a first-place team and individual finish at the Big Ten Preview (Sept. 23).
The Wolverines will take one week off before returning to action next weekend with the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational on Friday, Oct. 17.
