KALAMAZOO - The 10th-ranked Calvin women's cross country team dominated the MIAA field on Saturday at the MIAA Jamboree, cruising to a first place total of 20 points. Calvin finished 39 points ahead of 20th-ranked Hope as the Flying Dutch took second.

Calvin took the top three spots and placed five in the top eight to run away with the win. Sophomore Cassie Vince (Amherst, OH/Amherst HS) was the race winner, clocking in with a time of 22:29 while sophomore teammate Lauren Strohbehn (Stillwater, MN/St. Croix Prepatory) was second (22:36) and senior teammate Sarah Danner (Watkins Glen, NY/Charles Dickerson HS) third (22:42).

Also finishing in the top 10 were senior Paige McGahan (Brighton/Brighton HS) in sixth (23:31) and senior Kimby Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in eighth (23:39).

Rounding out Calvin's top seven were sophomore Hope Gaffner (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) in 11th (23:51) and senior Kate Ardinger (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) in 13th (24:12).

"It was a good day for our team," said Calvin head women's cross country coach Brian Diemer. "Cassie Vince ran a real tough race and Lauren Strohbehn and Sara Danner worked very nicely together to give us a really nice punch up front. The rest of our top seven filled in the holes where we needed them too. One thing I would like to see improvement is to continue to narrow the time gap in the middle of our pack. I think this team will do that as the season continues. Overall I am very pleased with what I saw today."

Calvin will now prepare to compete at the prestigious Notre Dame Invitational next Friday with several nationally-ranked teams from around the Midwest expected to compete.
