SOUTH BEND, Ind. (9/19/2014) -- With some cool fall temperatures in the air, the University of Detroit Mercy women's cross country team was in prime form as the Titans had five runners go under 20 minutes at the 35th Annual National Catholic Championships, held on Friday at Notre Dame.
"It has been awhile since we have had five runners go under 20 minutes at Notre Dame," said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Guy Murray.
Detroit totaled 250 points in the 5k race for 10th place among Division I schools.
Senior Zeinab Baydoun was the Titans top runner for the third-straight week as she finished 31st in 18:51, just two seconds behind her 5k career best set at this year's Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational. The time was also more than a minute faster than her three previous runs on the Notre Dame course.
Freshman Sydnie Fetherolf was 41st in 19:03, just one second shy of her season low, while freshman Taylor Smith returned from a foot injury that kept her out of the home meet to take 49th in 19:15.
Senior Sara Taylor set a career mark with a time of 19:38 for 70th, six seconds better than her run at the 2012 Horizon League Championship, and freshman Jenny Ponkowski posted a season-best 19:48 for 77th.
Sophomore Samantha Zakalowski took 80th in 20:00, while freshman Sydney Shaw tallied a season-low 21:15 for 89th. Rounding out the Titans was freshman Jenna Hickson as she also recorded a new personal record finishing 92nd in 21:38.
The Titans will now have an extra week of practice before getting back on the course at the Greater Louisville Classic on Oct. 4.
