KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Fresh off its win at the Valparaiso Crusader Classic, the Western Michigan women's cross country team hosts Mid-American Conference rivals Eastern Michigan for the George Dales Invitational on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Pine View Golf Club in Three Rivers, Mich.
The meet, a dual meet between WMU and EMU this season, is named after Western Michigan Hall-of-Famer George Dales. Dales coached the men's cross country team to back-to-back NCAA Championships in the 1964 and 1965. Dales, as usual, will be there to fire off the starter pistol to start the 6k race.
Two freshmen provided big sparks for the Broncos last weekend at Valparaiso with Maria McDaniel pacing the team and winning the overall race. McDaniel finished with a 4k time of 13:00.5 for her first collegiate win. The race was shortened from 6k to 4k due to heat and potential severe weather. Fellow freshman Hanne Christensen finished seventh overall and was WMU's third finisher on the day with a time of 13:56.5. Veteran Ann Marie Arseneau was third overall and the Broncos' second finisher for one of her top finishes in her collegiate career.
Sophomores Daya Wagh and Amy Littlefield helped round out Western Michigan's top five, while Raychel Figurski finished as WMU's sixth runner and 15th overall. Senior Becca Peacock rounded out the top seven in 15th overall.
The Eagles have won the past four George Dales Invitationals with three of the four being dual meets.
