Detroit Mercy Women - Fetherolf, Baydoun Pace Titans To Second Place In Season Opener

ROCHESTER, Mich. (8/29/2014) – Freshman Sydnie Fetherolf and senior Zeinab Baydoun both took home honors with top-10 finishes as the University of Detroit Mercy women's cross country team started the 2014 campaign in enemy territory at the Golden Grizzly Open on Friday.
Detroit totaled 41 points in the 4k event to take second overall.
Running in her first collegiate race, the rookie Fetherolf recorded a time of 14:55, just four seconds shy of third place.
Baydoun set a personal record with a time of 15:04 for sixth place, topping her 4k PR of 15:29 she set at Oakland on a hot day in 2012.
Sophomore Devon Sutton bested her career 4k time as she posted a 15:37 for 14th, 21 seconds faster than her race at Oakland last year.
UDM had three other harriers claim top-20 spots starting with freshman Jenny Ponkowski, who was 17th in 15:43. Sophomore Samantha Zakalowski nearly took a minute off her previous 4k PR as she was 18th in 15:48, while freshman Taylor Smith claimed 19th in 15:54.
Freshman Sydney Shaw clocked a 16:12 to finish in 22nd and senior Sara Taylor placed 24th with a career-low 16:35, more than a minute improvement from her run at OU last season.
The Titans will get back to work tomorrow with a practice as they begin training for their next event in the 28th Annual Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational, which is scheduled for next Saturday, Sept. 6, at Cass Benton Park in Northville.
The day will start with the men's and women's 5k open races at 9:30 a.m., followed by the annual middle school races and the Tommy Titan Future Legends Kid's Race. The women's collegiate 5k is slated for 11:15 a.m., while the men's 4-mile is set for 11:45 a.m.
