JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- University of Michigan women's track and field senior Alex Leptich (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a strong showing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds Friday (May 30) at the University of North Florida's Hodges Stadium. Leptich won the third heat and had the fourth-fastest time at the preliminaries with a personal-best mark of 10:03.43.
In addition to Leptich, fellow senior Megan Weschler (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt) fell just shy of advancing in the 3,000m steeplechase. Weschler finished 14th in the event with a time of 10:14.02.
Sophomore Cindy Ofili (Ypsilanti, Mich./Huron) and senior Erin Busbee (Cleveland, Ohio/Collinwood) competed in the first round of the 100-meter hurdles with the prospect of advancing to Saturday's quarterfinals (May 31). Ofili won her heat and automatically advanced after clocking a time of 13.25 seconds. It was the ninth-fastest time of the six heats. Busbee was unable to reach the quarterfinals after finishing sixth in her heat and 28th overall with a time of 13.62 seconds.
Senior Kiley Tobel (Commerce Twp., Mich./Walled Lake Western) capped her record-setting career with an 18th-place performance in the pole vault. Tobel cleared 4.05 meters (13-3 1/2 feet).
Freshman Aaron Howell (Farmington Hills, Mich./Farmington) tied for 38th in the high jump by clearing the bar at 1.67 meters (5-5 3/4 feet).
The Wolverines will finish competition at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds on Saturday (May 31).
