JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field team got off to a strong start at the NCAA East Qualifier, finishing the first day with two athletes moving on to the quarterfinal rounds May 30-31.
In the first event on the track, sophomore Jeff Elam (Latrobe, Pa.-Greater Latrobe Senior) had an astounding performance in the 400m hurdles, notching a career-best time of 51.68. Elam has been consistently bettering his own times in the 400H, as he set two personal records in the preliminary and championship heats at the 2014 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, May 16-17. The Latrobe, Pa. native was able to get the best of the three athletes who claimed podium finishes above him at the MAC Championships, as he was the top MAC competitor to qualify for the quarterfinals with a 15th-place finish. Also representing the conference in the next round will be Sean Weems of Akron, MAC Champion Parker Scott of Central Michigan, and Kent State's Miles Dunlap. Elam will put in his final effort to punch his ticket to Eugene, Ore. for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, June 11-14, tomorrow evening at 7:30 p.m.
One more Eagle earned a qualifying mark in his event, as Grzegorz Kalinowski (Torun, Poland-Nicolaus Copernicus University) finished fourth in the 1500m run in 3:45.45. Kalinowski finished less than a second behind top qualifier Sean Tobin from Mississippi in a tightly-contested opening heat in which the first six finishers crossed the line between 3:44.84 and 3:45.99. The senior will be the only member of the MAC running in the quarterfinal round on Saturday, as MAC Champion Clayton Murphy of Akron was eliminated after falling five seconds behind the pack in the first heat.
The Green and White was unable to secure a third qualifying time for the day with the conclusion of the preliminary 400m dash. MAC Champion Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio-Findlay) took 37th in 47.37, but his freshman campaign has not come to a close as the MAC Championship co-MVP will compete again on Saturday in both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays, slated for 6 p.m. and 9:25 p.m., respectively.
Along with Elam's quarterfinal heat tomorrow, the Eagles will run two events on the track, beginning with the 110m hurdles at 5 p.m., in which Bryce Lindsey (New Middletown, Ohio-Fairfield Senior) will look to join Elam and Kalinowski as a quarterfinal qualifier. Also looking for a spot in the next stage of the NCAA East Regional will be Cameron Bolton (Missouri City, Texas-Hightower) and Chris Scott (Holt, Mich.-Holt), who will compete in the prelims for the 200m dash at 8 p.m.
Finishing up the second day's schedule for the Green and White will be Keith Williams (Sherman, Ill.-Williamsville) and Donald Scott (Apopka, Fla.-Apopka) in the field events. Williams will start the day at 10 a.m. in the hammer throw, while Scott will take on the triple jump at 5 p.m. in an effort to make his second NCAA Championships appearance.
