YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (5/4/2014) -- The fastest two men in the Horizon League are both student-athletes from the University of Detroit Mercy men's outdoor track and field team as freshman Brandon Wilks and Charles Anthony finished 1-2 in the 100 meter dash on the final day of the Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Youngstown, Ohio.
The UDM men's team was in fifth place with 22 points after day two and finished the competition third overall with 105 points.
"The meet went better than expected for us," said UDM Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Guy Murray. "We had some question marks turn into exclamation points and just had a great team effort. Everyone did their jobs and covered their bases."
Wilks had a time of 10.70 and a new personal record in the 100 meters for first place and 10 points just edging out Anthony in second place with eight points and his mark of 10.72. Wilks earned the Horizon League Men's Track Freshman of the Year honor after also helping the men's 4x100 meter relay team of Steven Ivanics, Khalil Parris, and Anthony finish in second place for eight points with a mark of 41.80. The team run was good for the No. 2 all-time Titan-best run.
Anthony was not done with just the 100m result as he also came in first place in the 200 meters running a time of 21.70 and adding 10 points to Detroit's total.
