STANFORD, Calif. -- Freshman Erin Finn (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield) improved upon her own school record in the 5,000-meter run with the third-fastest time in the NCAA this season to lead the 20th-ranked University of Michigan women's track and field team at the Payton Jordan Invitational on Sunday (May 4) at Cobb Track & Angell Field.
Finn completed the 5,000-meter race in 15:26.08, which was 15.27 seconds faster than her previous school record she set at the Mt. SAC Relays (April 18) in her collegiate debut in the event. In section one, the fastest heat of the day, Finn finished 13th overall and second among collegians with the third-best time recorded in the NCAA this season.
Junior Brook Handler (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester)clocked the sixth-fastest 1,500-meter run time in section two, but was the second collegian to cross the finish line at 4:15.82. Her time was a 2.44 second personal record, remains the top time in the Big Ten and marks the sixth-fastest time recorded in the nation this season.
Five of the six Wolverines that competed in the 800-meter run recorded personal-best times, including sophomore Danielle Pfeifer (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) and junior/sophomore Devon Hoppe (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar), who own U-M's top two 800 meter times this season. Pfeifer and Hoppe ran in section four of the 800m, finishing fifth and sixth, respectively, with career-best times of 2:06.68 and 2:07.32. Freshman Jamie Morrissey (Rochester, Mich./Rochester Adams) placed seventh in section five of the 800-meter run, where she clocked a personal-best time of 2:08.80, which ranks third on Michigan's performance list this season.
