UDM - Titans Compete in Final Weekend Before Horizon League Championships

DETROIT (4/24/2014) -- And then there was just a single week between the University of Detroit Mercy men's and women's outdoor track and field teams and the Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships as the Titans will compete at the Hillsdale Relays in Hillsdale, Mich. The UDM throwers will head to the Highlander Invitational in Radford, Va.
Where They Were Last Weekend
The majority of Titans competed at the Jesse Owens Classic hosted by Ohio State while Detroit was also at Grand Valley State for the Al Owens Classic.
The Titans This Weekend
The 48th Hillsdale College "Gina" Relays begin Thursday evening with multi-athletes and distance runners competing. The events will continue Friday and final events will take place Saturday. The UDM throwers will compete at the Highlander Invitational at Radford University in Radford, Va. Radford is the alma mater for Detroit Titans Assistant Track and Field Coach Brian Richotte who works with the Titan throwers. The throwing events at Radford will take place Friday and Saturday.
The Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be May 2-4 and the climax of the 2014 Horizon League track and field season. This year's championship will be hosted by Youngstown State in Youngstown, Ohio. UDM hosted last year's outdoor championship at Eastern Michigan.
Horizon League Top Runners of the Week
Senior Louisa Coppola was among the top Horizon League Women's Runners of the Week as she ran the 1500 meter race at Ohio State and improved on her personal record for the second straight week. After running 4:31.38 last weekend at Bucknell, she ran 4:28.91 and nearly broke the school record coming up just .04 off the UDM all-time best of 4:28.87 set by Andrea Karl back in 2006. Coppola ended up placing eighth in a tough field of 54. Senior Charles Anthony was another top Titan athlete mentioned among the top Horizon League Men's Runners of the Week as he ran the 100 meter dash in a time of 10.83, just off his personal record of 10.72, to finish 11th of 38 runners. Anthony was also 12th in the 200 meters with a time of 21.79 that was just off his PR of 21.65. Anthony's mark in the 100m is currently third in the Horizon League.
Horizon League Top Field Athletes of the Week
Among the top athletes for Detroit last weekend at Ohio State was senior Whitney Rogers of the women's team. Rogers had a triple jump of 11.81m which was good for sixth place at Bucknell. Rogers was also part of the 4x400 meter relay team that finished with a time of 3:51.98 to come in fifth among 16 teams.
Not the Only One
Senior Charles Anthony was not the only Titan to run the 100 meters in under 11 seconds as freshman Brandon Wilks finished with a time of 10.90 at Ohio State to finish 16th of 38.
Who Says Its Not Easy Being Greene
Junior Jasmine Greene from the women's team posted a personal best of 1:03.11 in the 400 meter hurdles at Ohio State last weekend. Her run was the No. 2 all-time Titan best mark and she captured a win in her heat and placed 10th in the event. Her mark is currently the fourth best in the Horizon League. Greene also helped the 4x400 meter relay team place fifth with a time of 3:51.98.
Garnering More Personal Bests
Sophomore Allison Garner of the UDM women's team set a new personal best in the 100 meter dash at Ohio State placing 17th with a time of 12.14. Her run placed her in the No. 5 all-time best mark in UDM history but she wasn't done there as Garner also ran the 200 meters finishing with a mark of 25.34 for the No. 7 all-time Titan mark.
The Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be in Youngstown, Ohio May 2-4 and hosted by Youngstown State.
