BAY CITY, Mich. - Senior Kalena Franklin of the top-ranked Grand Valley State track and field team has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Track Athlete of the Week, the second straight that a GVSU student-athlete has won.
Franklin hit two provisional marks and had three top-five finishes at the EIU Big Blue Classic over the weekend. Franklin's best performance came in the 100 meter hurdles, where she won the event against a host of Division I competition with a time of 13.66 seconds, the fourth-best time in Division II this season. She then finished second in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.36 seconds, the 10th-best time in Division II so far this year. Franklin also ran the anchor leg of the 4x400 meter relay team that finished fifth in a time of 3:51.83.
She joins Jessica Janecke as recipients of the weekly award so far this year, as Janecke earned the honor last week.
Franklin and the rest of the Lakers will be competing across multiple meets this weekend, as GVSU will be sending student-athletes to the Hillsdale Invite (Hillsdale, Mich.), Hilltopper Relays (Bowling Green, Ky.) and the Mason Spring Invite (Fairfax, Va.).
Ashland's Jennifer Foster was named the GLIAC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week.
