Provided by Hillsdale
Most of the Hillsdale College men's track team headed south this weekend to compete in the Bellarmine Invitational, held in Louisville, Kentucky. A handful of athletes went the other way, running on the campus of Michigan State University at the Spartan Invitational.
Making his mark in Kentucky was Ty Etchemendy, who turned in two fantastic performances, both individually and part of a relay. He took first place in the triple jump, the event in which he was an indoor All-American, with a leap of 14.05 meters. he also was joined by Maurice Jones, Matthew Raffin and Elliot Murphy on the second-place 4x400 relay team, who finished with a time of 3:15.03.
Etchemendy was far from the only field-event athlete to have a victorious day. Senior captain Brett Dailey stepped up with a monster throw in the discus, winning the event with a toss of 46.16 meters. Nathaniel Nobbs took second overall in the javelin throw, hitting a mark of 51.03 meters.
Raffin finished in the top four in both hurdle events, taking third in the 400 version with a time of 54.87 seconds, and fourth in the 110 hurdles, in 14.97 seconds.
Distance runner Joseph Newcomb took eighth in the 1500 meter run, in 4:04.36.
The Chargers' top competitor at MSU was Luke Hickman, who took third in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:37.52.
