LSSU - Balczak and Schweiger earn all-America honors in heptathlon

WINSTON SALEM, N.C. - Lake Superior State junior Justin Balczak and senior Kaleb Schweiger earned All-America honors in the men's heptathlon after finishing fourth and sixth, respectively, in the event during NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships held Friday and Saturday in Winston Salem, N.C.
Balczak was fifth and Schweiger sixth through Friday's four events. Balczak moved up one spot Saturday and finished 483 points behind champion Nick Lebron of Southern Connecticut State. He totaled 5,282 points, while Schweiger (5,134 points) was 631 points behind the leader.
Balczak opened Saturday's competition with a third-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking a time of :08.29. Schweiger was 10th in :08.93.
Schweiger won the pole vault, clearing 4.70 meters, while Balczak was third at 4.60 meters. The Laker duo closed out the meet with the 1,000-meter run. Schweiger took third in 2:44.97, while Balczak was 11th in 2:57.69.
LSSU sophomore Robert Valdez tied for ninth in the men's high jump. He cleared 2.05 meters on his second attempt, but missed all three attempts at his school-record heigh of 2.10 meters.
