State of Michigan NCAA Track and Field athletes head to indoor nationals
Top track and field athletes from our state's NCAA Division 1, 2 and 3 colleges will be heading to their respective indoor national championship meets this weekend, March 14 and 15.
The NCAA Division I meet, to be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico includes athletes from Michigan, Michigan State, Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan.
Heading into the meet, Michigan State's Leah O'Connor (JR/Croswell-Lexington H.S.) has the third best qualifying mark in the Women's Mile with a time of 4:34.35. O'Connor's teammate, Tori Franklin, qualified with the third-best Women's Triple Jump mark of 13.56 meters.
Michigan's Erin Finn (FR/West Bloomfield H.S.) has run the eighth-best qualifying time of 15:52.11 in the Women's 5000 Meters. Finn's Wolverine teammate Cindy Ofili (SO/Ypsilanti H.S.) enters the competition with the fifth-best qualifying time of 8.08 in the Women's 60 Meter Hurdles. Also for Michigan, their Women's DMR team goes into the national meet with the seventh-best seeded time.
Top performers for the men include Antonio James, who is seeded eighth in the Men's Shot Put and third in the Men's Weight Throw. Eastern Michigan senior Max Babits enters the competition ranked fifth in the Men's Pole Vault.
In Division II, the NCAA Championships will be held in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Once again Grand Valley State University's men and women will be favored to finish very well. GLIAC Champions GVSU has been one of the top track and field schools in the NCAA II for a number of years. Grand Valley State's women's team won the national indoor title in both 2011 and 2012.
Individually in Division II, the State of Michigan has also qualified athletes from Hillsdale College, Saginaw Valley, Ferris State, Wayne State, Northern Michigan and Lake Superior. (full list below)
The NCAA Division III Indoor Championships will be held in Lincoln, Nebraska. A pair of Calvin runners will be competing, including 2013 NCAA Division III Outdoor 10,000 Meter champion Nicole Michmerhuizen.
