LSSU - Five Lakers qualify for NCAA Indoor Nationals

NEW ORLEANS - Lake Superior State's Roberto Valdez, Oshane Thomas, Sashawna Bennett, Kaleb Schweiger and Justin Balczak have qualified for the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships, which will be held March 14-15 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
All five LSSU athletes also earned United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Region honors.
Balczak, a junior, is ranked fifth with 5,264 points, and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion Schweiger, a senior, is ranked sixth with 5,063 points in the men's heptathlon.
Balczak is the defending NCAA indoor runner-up in the multi-event. He did not compete in the heptathlon at the GLIAC Championships due to qualifying automatically in December. Schweiger is a first-time NCAA qualifier.
Their top competition includes Southern Connecticut senior Nick LeBron, Minnesota State junior Nathan Hancock, Emporia State sophomore Payson Maydew and Nebraska-Kearney junior Dillon Schrodt.
Thomas, a sophomore, qualified 17th in the men's 200-meter dash with a time of :21.96. Valdez, also a sophomore, is ranked 17th in the men's high jump at 2.10 meters.
Bennett, a junior, qualified 17th in the women's 60-meter hurdles with a time of :08.66.
