BOARDMAN, Ohio (11/2/2013) -- Senior Louisa Coppola ended her Titan cross country career with First Team All-Horizon League honors as the University of Detroit Mercy women's team took fourth at the HL Championship, held at the 5k course at Boardman High School in Boardman, Ohio.
For the second straight year, UDM finished fourth, as the Titans posted 128 points. Host Youngstown State finished first with 36, while UIC was second (58) and Oakland third (84).
With the women's race following the men, the Titans had to not only deal with a beat up course as the second race, but also the mud and light rain that was falling.
Coppola improved on her fifth-place effort from a year ago at the Horizon League Championship by taking third with a time of 18:14, four seconds faster than her HL run in 2012 and just 12 seconds shy of second. It was her fifth top-10 finish on the year and in all six of her races as a senior, she was in the top 14.
Senior Ciara Curley-Poppe was just short of a personal record and All-League accolades claiming 16th in 19:23 in her first HL championship appearance, while junior Zeinab Baydoun ran a season-best 19:46 for 31st.
Junior Sara Taylor was also just behind her PR as she placed 38th in a time of 19:56, giving three Titan harriers under-20 runs in the weather conditions.
Freshman Devon Sutton took 44th with a time of 20:12 and classmate Samantha Zakalowski was the next in line for UDM clocking a time of 20:39 for 54th.
Senior Torrie Eger turned in a season-low 21:02 as she crossed the finish line in 61st, and senior Rachel Hofsess returned after missing a few races with an injury to place 71st in 21:32.
The Titans will now get ready for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday, Nov. 15, hosted by Wisconsin at the Zimmer Championship Course in Madison, Wis.
