1996 was the first year of existence for and also the first year the MHSAA LP XC Finals were held at Michigan International Speedway. That first year had some setbacks and also some incredible successes.

In the 1996 Class A Girls' Finals the big winner was Portage Northern's Sharon Van Tuyl who claimed the state title in a time of 17:52. For the boys, Ryan Shay won his fourth straight Class D championship, easing to victory in a cold rain in a time of 15:30.

The initial struggles of having the state meet at MIS were remedied in the following years and even better competition and times were to come.

The fastest boy's time ever run at MIS for the state meet for 5K was 14:10.4 by Rockford's Dathan Ritzenhein back in the fall of 2000. Dathan just ran a 2:07:47 marathon last year in Chicago and of course has represented the USA at the Olympics.

The best girl's time ever run for the 5K course at MIS was 16:54.8 by Rochester's Megan Goethal's in 2009. Goethals currently runs for the University of Washington and was the National Runner-Up for 5000 meters at the 2012 NCAAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Good luck to all individuals and teams running at this year's MHSAA LP XC Finals.
