ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Mason Ferlic (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds Park Academy) of the 16th-ranked University of Michigan men's cross country team was named the Big Ten Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week on Tuesday (Oct. 22).
Ferlic was Michigan's top finisher at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational on Saturday (Oct. 19), finishing 12th overall in a field of 287 participants with a time of 23:35. He was the first Big Ten Conference runner to complete the 8K race, recording a one-mile pace of 4:44.65.
Ferlic helped Michigan, which was unranked at the time of the meet, finish ninth as a team, topping 12 teams who were ranked in the nation's top 30 at the time. The team's collective performance at Wisconsin catapulted the Wolverines back into the USTFCCCA Coaches Poll top 30, landing them at No. 16 in the poll that was also announced today.
This marks Ferlic's second career Big Ten weekly honor, as he received the conference's top weekly distinction last season on Sept. 25, 2012.
The Wolverines will begin the championship portion of their season on Sunday, Nov. 3, at the Big Ten Championships, which will be hosted by Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. The men's 8K race is slated to begin at 10:45 a.m.
