BRIGHTON, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University's women's cross country team opened up the 2013 campaign Friday, Aug. 30, with the EMU Triangular. Junior Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia / School #42) took a commanding lead in the event with a 17:48.0 finish, almost one minute ahead of the next finisher.

"It was great to see Victoria start out at a much higher level than last year," said Head Coach Sue Parks. "After her success on the track, she is very motivated to see what she can do this cross country season."

Senior Kayla Pfund (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Lutheran North) claimed a third-place finish with her time of 18:43.0, and freshman Anna Aldrich (Fremont, Ind. / Fremont) finished not too far behind with 19:06.6, a time that earned her a fifth place spot in the meet.

Juniors Taylor Knoll (Warren, Mich. / Mott) and Marina Manjon Rivadulla (Barcelona, Spain / Escola University) brought home marks of 19:51.1 and 21:05.9, respectively. Sophomores Amy Frauhammer (Saline, Mich. / Saline) and Rebecca Quaintance (Commerce, Mich. / Walled Lake Northern) notched times of 19:58.8 and 22:27.3. Action was also seen by more of the team's newer members. Redshirt freshman Samantha Szuminski (Saline, Mich. / Saline) came in at 22:31.3 while freshman Megan Hubbard (Hanover, Mich. / Horton) tallied a 22:31.3 mark in her first EMU appearance.

EMU's effort earned the team a first place finish with 34 points. Bowling Green came in at 40 points and Toledo rounded out the triangular with 46 points.

Coach Parks had an overall good impression of the event: "I thought that it was a solid opener for us. The team has only been together for one week and we know how much work to do but we definitely came away with some positives from today's ace. I was pleased with the effor of some of our new runners."

The women's cross country team faces their next challenge in Bowling Green, Ohio, when they will compete in the Mel Brodt Collegiate Opener on Friday, Sept. 13.
