EMU - Eastern's Men Grab 1-2-3 Finish at EMU Triangular

BRIGHTON, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team started off the 2013 season with the EMU Triangular Friday, Aug. 30. The Eagles runners claimed first, second, and third place finishes in the field consisting of athletes from EMU, Bowling Green State University, and the University of Toledo.

Redshirt junior Ian Hancke (Haslett, Mich. / Haslett) added a first place finish to his career, coming in at a time of 15:56.20. Following closely behind was teammate Cameron Trinh (Oakland, Calif. / Skyline) with a 15:56.50 mark. Rounding out the lead trio was Austin Lane (Greenwich, N.Y. / Greenwich Central), who notched a 15:57.20.

"It was a very controlled effort with the one-two-three and likewise with our four and five placers," said Head Coach John Goodridge. "Today's meet gave some members of the team an opportunity to be in scoring positions that they haven't ever had in the past. They responded just the way we hoped and raced very competitively and were in control the whole way; it was a nice way to get the year started."

The Eagles added two more runners in the top-10, with sophomore William Trice (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Northern) and junior Clay Strycker (New Lothrop, Mich. / Westfield) finishing with times of 16:23.70 and 16:26.00, placing them at eighth and ninth place, respectively. Three more Eagle runners completed the 5000 meter race: Freshman Jared LaBarge (Alpena, Mich. / Alpena) recorded his first race as an Eagle with a 17:12.80 finish, and sophomores Brandon Wynsma (Augusta, Mich. / Richland Gull Lake) and Scott Bradley (Battle Creek, Mich. / Lakeview) came in at 17:17.30 and 18:09.60.

Overall, EMU finished in first place with a score of 21, followed by a 47-point effort from Bowling Green and 52 points by Toledo.

"We've got a lot of work to do. We've only been on campus for two days and haven't had an opportunity yet to really evaluate the work that the men did over the summer," says Coach Goodridge regarding the rest of the season in search of the coveted MAC Championship four-peat. "We're looking forward to that; it's great to have the boys back on campus."

The Eastern Michigan men have two weeks to prepare for their next meet, the Mel Brodt Collegiate Opener. The Opener will be hosted by Bowling Green State University on Friday, Sept. 13.
