EMU - Pair of Eagles Take the Field at Respective National Championships

MONCTON, N.B./DES MOINES, Iowa (EMUEagles.com) - Two members of the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team competed at their respective native national championship meets during the weekend, June 22-23. Alysha Newman (Delaware, Ontario-Mother Teresa) saw action in the pole vault at the 2013 Canadian Track and Field Championships while Tatijana Jacobson (Woodville, Ohio-Woodmore) attemped to qualify for Team USA at the 2013 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

Newman, trying to secure a spot on the Canadian Junior National team that will compete at the Junior Pan American Games in Colombia, placed third in the pole vault, leaping 13-feet 1.50-inches (4.00 meters). Heather Hamilton of the University of Toronto took top honors with a mark of 13-feet 9.50-inches (4.20 meters).

The Delaware, Ontario native will have one more chance to earn her place on Team Canada when she competes at the Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships, July 12-14.

At Drake Stadium, Jacobson went against the nation's best in the high jump. The Woodville, Ohio native was unable to clear the 5-feet 10.50-inch- (1.79 meter-) bar on her three attempts. The University of Arizona's Brigetta Barrett won the event with a leap of 6-feet 8.25-inches (2.04 meters).
