EUGENE, Ore. -- Junior Ali Arastu (Northville, Mich./Northville) and junior/sophomore Cody Riffle (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit) qualified for the 400-meter hurdle and shot put final, respectively, to highlight the University of Michigan men's track and field team's performance on the first day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Wednesday (June 5) at the University of Oregon's historic Hayward Field.

Arastu ran a season-best time of 50.03 to finish second in heat two of the 400-meter hurdles and automatically earn a spot in the finals, which will take place on Friday (June 7) at 4:40 p.m. PDT. Meanwhile, Riffle used a throw of 18.62 meters (61-1.25) to qualify for the shot put finals. That throw proved to be his best of the day and put him in ninth place overall.

Sophomore/freshman Mason Ferlic (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds Park Academy) was just shy of qualifying for the 3,000-meter steeplechase final, finishing 13th overall in a time of 8:47.09. He was in fifth place in heat two heading into the bell lap but could not hold on and placed sixth. The top five finishers in each heat, plus the next two best times moved onto the finals -- Ferlic was the first runner bumped from the final.

Ferlic and Riffle each earned All-America second team honors for their performances.

After five events in the decathlon (100m, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m), fifth-year senior Kurt Reichenbach (Brighton, Mich./Pinckney Community) is currently sitting in 21st place with 3,627 points. He will return tomorrow (Thursday, June 6) to complete the remaining five events (100m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, 1,500m).

Senior/junior Ethan Dennis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville) will join Reichenbach tomorrow, when he competes in the hammer throw at 1:30 p.m. PDT.
