MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – A total of 10 Central Michigan track and field athletes have earned berths to the 2013 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Preliminary Championships, the NCAA committee announced on Thursday. The group is the largest sent to the first round of competition by CMU since 2009 and is marked by youth, as it includes five freshmen.
The men’s team will be represented by senior Renaldo Powell (110m hurdles), junior Parker Scott (400m hurdles), sophomores Ethan Lievense (steeplechase) and Ben Wynsma (steeplechase), and freshmen Dee Smith (long jump) and Cole Walderzak (discus) while the women’s contingent will be made up of senior Maddie Ribant (steeplechase) and freshmen Devene Brown (discus), Kyla Walworth (discus), and Kyleigh Young (javelin).
“It is always an honor and a privilege to have athletes qualify to compete at the NCAA championships,” said CMU Director of Track and Field Willie Randolph. “To have an opportunity to represent CMU and the athletic family against some of the best athletes in the country makes the hard work, focus and determination worthwhile.”
Scott, the 2013 MAC champion in the 400m hurdles, owns the CMU men’s highest seed, No. 13 (51.77), while Brown leads the women with the region’s fifth-best discus throw (53.97). Ribant will be making her second appearance in the NCAA preliminary round.
Central Michigan will compete in the East region, which will be held in Greensboro, N.C. on the host campus of North Carolina A&T from May 23-25. Qualifiers out of the East and West Regions will compete in the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore. The top 12 finishers in each event will advance to the competition at the Ducks’ Hayward Field.
“Being that the regional system is now the first round of NCAAs speaks volumes of the level of competition we will be up against,” said Randolph. “Our region alone has a large percentage of individual and team national champions. We are ready to compete and we look forward to the challenge."
