Babits Inches Closer to EMU Pole Vault Record at Sea Ray Relays

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (EMUEagles.com) – Competing against the top pole vaulters at the Sea Ray Relays, Max Babits set a new personal-best, leading to a fifth-place finish as the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team ended competition at the three-day meet down on the campus of the University of Tennessee, April 13.
Babits jumped 17-feet 0.75-inches (5.20 meters), keeping him at the fourth-best mark in EMU laurels and a few inches short of the outdoor record of 17-feet 5-inches (5.31 meters) by Mark Smith. Smith notched his place at the top of the EMU record books back in 1991.
In other field events, sophomore Solomon Ijah leaped 22-feet 4.25-inches (6.81 meters) for an 11th-place mark in the high jump before throwing the javelin 167-feet 5-inches (51.04 meters) to end in ninth. Freshman Julius Collier tossed 158-feet 3-inches (48.24 meters) to take the 11th spot.
After earning the title of Most Outstanding Performer at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships, Feb. 22-23, Grzegorz Kalinowski began his 2013 outdoor season with a fourth-place finish in the showcase division of the 1,500-meter run. Kalinowski crossed the finish line in 3:49.19 while teammate Ian Hancke turned in a time of 4:15.45 to place ninth.
A pair of EMU relay teams finished fourth in their respective events. The quartet of Chris Scott, Wayne Blanchard, Cameron Bolton and Jay Saunders finished the 4x100-meter relay in 41.12. In the 4x800-meter relay, Tyler Ross, Josh George, Kalinowski and Scott Bradley combined for a time of 7:34.72.
To round out the relays for the Green and White, the team of Matthew Williams, Bolton, Jeff Elam and Scott placed sixth in the 4x400-meter relay, completing the race in 3:11.20.
The Eagles will take the track at home for the only time this outdoor season, hosting the EMU Twilight on Olds/Marshall Track, April 19-20. The meet is set to begin Friday, April 19, at 3 p.m.
