KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (EMUEagles.com) – Competing against the top pole vaulters at the Sea Ray Relays, Max Babits set a new personal-best, leading to a fifth-place finish as the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team ended competition at the three-day meet down on the campus of the University of Tennessee, April 13.

Babits jumped 17-feet 0.75-inches (5.20 meters), keeping him at the fourth-best mark in EMU laurels and a few inches short of the outdoor record of 17-feet 5-inches (5.31 meters) by Mark Smith. Smith notched his place at the top of the EMU record books back in 1991.

After earning the title of Most Outstanding Performer at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships, Feb. 22-23, Grzegorz Kalinowski began his 2013 outdoor season with a fourth-place finish in the showcase division of the 1,500-meter run. Kalinowski crossed the finish line in 3:49.19 while teammate Ian Hancke turned in a time of 4:15.45 to place ninth.

A pair of EMU relay teams finished fourth in their respective events. The quartet of Chris Scott, Wayne Blanchard, Cameron Bolton and Jay Saunders finished the 4x100-meter relay in 41.12. In the 4x800-meter relay, Tyler Ross, Josh George, Kalinowski and Scott Bradley combined for a time of 7:34.72.

To round out the relays for the Green and White, the team of Matthew Williams, Bolton, Jeff Elam and Scott placed sixth in the 4x400-meter relay, completing the race in 3:11.20.

The Eagles will take the track at home for the only time this outdoor season, hosting the EMU Twilight on Olds/Marshall Track, April 19-20. The meet is set to begin Friday, April 19, at 3 p.m.
