SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan's women's distance medley relay and long jumper junior Erin Busbee (Cleveland, Ohio/Collinwood) each set new school records in their respective events to record wins on the opening day of the Notre Dame Alex Wilson Invitational on Friday (March 1) at the Loftus Sports Center.
The DMR ran the nation's fastest time of 10:56.66 to set a new school record and win the event. The relay consisted of senior Rebecca Addison (Spring Lake, Mich./Grand Haven) in the 1,200-meter leg, freshman Maya Long (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) running the 400-meter dash, senior Jillian Smith (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) in the 800-meter run and fifth-year senior Amanda Eccleston (Adrian, Mich./Tecumseh) in the final mile leg.
It marked the first time this combination of runners has competed together this season. The relay topped the previous school record of 11:01.51, which was run by Danielle Tauro, Serita Williams, Geena Gall and Nicole Edwards in 2008.
Busbee tied the nation's seventh-best mark in the long jump of 6.38 meters (20-11.25) to win the event. She topped her previous personal-best mark by roughly 15 inches.
Busbee edged the previous school record of 6.36 meters (20-10.5), which was set by Brandi Bentley in 1999.
Several Wolverines will be in action tomorrow (Saturday, March 2) on the final day of the Alex Wilson Invitational.
