Titans Compete in Final Tune-Up Before Horizon League Indoor Championships


ANN ARBOR, Mich. (2/16/2013) -- The University of Detroit Mercy indoor men's track and field team wrapped up its final competition before the Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships set for next weekend. The Titans were at the Grand Valley State Tune-Up Friday evening in Allendale and the Silverston Invitational Saturday in Ann Arbor.

At Friday's GVSU Tune-Up at the Kelly Family Sports Center in Allendale, Ryan Hofsess was leading in the 800 meters at the midway part of the race en route to a 1:56.03 personal record and sixth place finish. Also in the 800m, Chris Smalley came in eighth and set a new indoor personal best with a time of 1:56.39.

Joshua Carolin made his debut in the mile run at 4:25.62 finishing in the upper third of the pack in 17th place.

The 400 meter race had Vince Lefler (50.14) and Anthony Donald (50.55) run close to their personal records as Lefler came in fifth and Donald in 10th in a field of over 30 runners.

In the 3000 meters, George Holman ran to a new personal record of 9:00.55 while running to a 16th place finish.

The men's 4x400 meter relay team took the top spot with a mark of 3:24.98. Donald (50.6), Smalley (50.6), Carolin (51.8), and Alex Wesche (51.7) contributed to the team's time that featured 10 total teams.

At the Silverston Invitational on Saturday, the 60 meter hurdles had Steven Ivanics competing in the event and he finished in fifth with a time of 8.46.

The 400 meter race featured Colton Wirgau who ran the event with a mark of 51.65.

Charles Anthony was in the 60 meter dash trying to lower his season-best of 6.92 ran at 7.05 on Saturday to place sixth while Ivanics right behind him at 7.39.

The Horizon League Indoor Championships will be Feb. 23-24 in Youngstown, Ohio hosted by Youngstown State.
