Hillsdale College - Maurice Jones Wins at GVSU Tune-Up

February 15, 2013 - Maurice Jones is going into the 2013 GLIAC indoor track championships on the right note.
Jones, a junior, won the 400 meter dash with an NCAA provo time of 47.75 seconds. He was the only runner at the meet to achieve a provo time in that event, and he remains a prime contender for a conference championship, which is scheduled for next weekend.
The tune-up meet's purpose is just what its name implies: one chance for indoor track athletes to prime themselves to be at peak performance level for the championship meet. Jones certainly passed that test with his fine performance.
Thrower John Banovetz achieved the men's team's other two provo marks, coming in the shot put (16.58 meters) and the weight throw (17.6 meters). Banovetz is another athlete who has consistently finished in the top echelon of all events he's been in during the indoor season.
Sprinters Alex Mexictte and Michael Shaw finished second and third, respectively, in the 200 meter dash, with both runners finishing in less than 22.5 seconds in the race.
Justin Fawley also won the pole vault, clearing 14 feet, 2 1/2 inches. The pole vault is one of his better events in the heptathlon, an event he is sure to be a contender in next weekend.
Freshman Nick Shuster was the runner-up in the high jump (1.94 ,eters) while in the longer distance events, Kevin Frost achieved PR times in both the 400 and 800.
