ALLENDALE, Mich. - Karli Keur and Breanna Peabody broke school records on day one of the GVSU Big Meet hosted by Grand Valley State, while Brittni Hutton set a new school record in the 5,000m run at the Husky Classic, hosted by the University of Washington, as the Oakland men's and women's track and field teams competed on Friday.
"We had eight athletes compete today and came away with three school records and four new personal records," said coach Paul Rice. "You have to qualify for these invite sections at GVSU and our athletes proved they belonged there today. I am very happy for our hurdlers, and Karli is really learning how to race the 800. Brittni ran the whole race by herself and won her heat and I'm proud of how hard she trains and takes care of herself."
Hutton won her heat in the 5,000m run with a time of 16:45.31, breaking the previous record by almost 12 seconds, and finished 21st overall in the event.
"I am very happy Oakland was able to give Brittni this opportunity to compete in this great meet," added Rice. "She continues to do so much to take our program to new heights."
Keur broke her own school record in the 800m run with a time of 2:13.13 to finish seventh. Peabody also broke her own 60m hurdles record with a time of 8.64, good for a fifth-place finish.
Serena San Cartier finished eighth in the 60m hurdles behind Peabody with a time of 8.73. In the 5000m run at GVSU, Cassandra Peterson tallied a 47th-place finish with a time of 18:16.19, Hannah Scherer finished with a time of 18:38.66 and on the men's side Pat Cassady earned a time of 16:28.94.
The Golden Grizzlies will continue action tomorrow as they compete in the final day of the GVSU Big Meet at the Kelly Family Sports Center.
