Calvin Track and Field Teams Compete at NAIA/D3 Challenge at Olivet Nazarene

Bourbonnais, Illinois - The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the NAIA/Division III Challenge hosted by Olivet Nazarene University Saturday. A number of Calvin athletes recorded notable performances.

Highlights for the women’s team included:

*Junior sprinter Julie Busscher (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) placing third in the 60 meter dash (7.07).

*Sophomore Kelley Tuinenga (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids South Christian HS) taking sixth in the 400 meters (1:03.53).

*Junior Olivia Butler (Grant/Grant HS) winning the 800 meters (2:20.38) with junior Rebekah Folkema (Renfrew, ON/Renfrew Collegiate Institute) taking second (2:21./01) and freshman McKenzie Diemer (Caledonia/South Christian HS) taking fourth (2:21.57).

*Fifth-year senior Jodi Hoekstra (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) winning the mile run (5:09.88) with sophomore Kate Ardinger (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) taking second (5:11.39) and senior Kaylea Brase (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial HS) taking fifth (5:16.87).

*Junior Nicole Michmerhuizen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) winning the 5,000 meters with an indoor career-best time of 16:58.03 while junior Alyssa Oram (Cheboygan/Home Schooled) was fourth (18:30.27).

Highlights for the men’s team included:

*A 1-2-3 sweep in the 3,000 meters with senior Kevin Peterson (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) winning in a time of 8:54.88 while sophomore Stephen Haagsma (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) was second (8:57.04) and sophomore Jacob Kuyvenhoven (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) third (8:57.16).

*A 1-2-3-4 sweep in the 5,000 meters with senior Dan Kerr (Petoskey/Petoskey HS) winning in a time of 14:40.29 while senior Job Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH/Mascenic Regional HS) second (14:42.22), senior Greg Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS) third (14:54.86) and senior David VandeBunte (Byron Center/Byron Center HS) fourth (14:58).

*Freshman Jon Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) fourth in the high jump (6-3) and fifth in the triple jump (40-8).

*Sophomore Erik Holstege (Kewsick, VA/Monticello HS) fifth in the long jump (21-9) and eighth in the 60 meter hurdles (8.90).

*Senior Aaron Meckes (Bay City/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) second in the shot put (50-0 3/4).

Both Calvin teams will now break until February 8 and 9 as some athletes will compete at the Grand Valley State Big Meet on February 8 while several others will compete at Calvin’s own Calvin Invitational on February 9.
